I don't have problems with the colons in tags. IMHO they offer a nice way to group tags that belong to 1 specification (historic-related data in this case). historic_road would be worse. But people have different tastes.

But with e.g. a well-defined preset in JOSM, a mapper does not have to type the tag keys themselves, so it doesn't matter all that much, isn't it ?
